At the turn of the century, neighbours
Arthur Davidson and
William S Harley toyed with the idea
of producing a motorized
bicycle.
When Arthur's brother Walter, a mechanic,
and later his other brother, William
A, a toolmaker, joined them, they
produced the first Harley-Davidson
engine in 1902, and later in 1903
they produced
the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
In that same year, the first Harley-Davidson
factory was
constructed at the back of the Davidson's
home. One hundred
years later the Harley Davidson company
export motorcycles all
over the world.
From such humble beginnings the company
have produced a
product which has taken on cult status
based upon traditional styling and
engineering.
Of recent years newer products such
as the mighty V-Rod and
the Buell have gained a further cult
following.
Although many Japanese manufacturers
have copied the Harley concept none
have succeeded in surpassing Harley's
commanding
position within the cruiser market.
